As a low-income program, eligibility for the MI Choice Waiver
Program requires an individual’s income must be $1,809
or less per month. Allowable assets for an individual are
limited to $2,000. If the person has a spouse, the spouse’s
income is not computed in the qualifying amount. The federal
spousal impoverishment guidelines are utilized. Staff
will assist applicants in establishing Medicaid eligibility.
MI Choice is available to individuals 18 years of age or
older with a disability who would otherwise require nursing
home care or individuals over age 65 and
in need of nursing home care. The program does not
provide 24-hour care. As a MI Choice agent, MORC Home Care
covers the following six-county area: Livingston, Macomb,
Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, and Washtenaw. (Click HERE
to view a county map.)
All persons referred to MI Choice receive a telephone intake
interview to assist in determining eligibility for an in-home
assessment. If a person is not eligible for the assessment,
he or she is assisted through referral to other appropriate
community agencies.
If the person is eligible for the assessment, his or her
name is added to a waiting list and will be called based on
available funding. At that time a registered nurse and social
worker visit the person’s home. A more in-depth assessment
evaluates the person’s physical and mental health; functional
status; informal and formal supports; home environment; financial
resources; and third party supports, such as insurance.
Eligibility for MI Choice cannot be determined prior to an
assessment.
The MI Choice Waiver Program is in compliance
with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and Section 504 of the
Social Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
